Islamists in Power; What Could Go Wrong?

tahrir

The New York Times has run an op-ed entitled, ‘The Overblown Islamist Threat.’ Big surprise: There’s no Islamist threat! They’re all moderates! Just like in 1979 Iran or in Turkey more recently. Do you think we might see an oped in The New York Times entitled, ‘The Islamist Threat is Very Real?’ Of course not. But the real surprise is the author’s identity. It’s former Jordanian foreign minister Marwan Muasher. Huh? Jordan’s policy on Islamism has been based precisely on the … [Read more...]

A Parable of Middle East History: The Well-Intentioned Arab and the Malicious Genie

Free_Officers

One day in 1952, a young Arab intellectual was walking along the shore of the Nile when he spotted something glinting in the sun. He picked it up and saw that it was a small brass lamp. Thinking that he might have found an attractive antique he took it home and brushed off the sand with the sleeve of his jacket. Suddenly, there was a bright flash that knocked him over. When he stood up and regained his senses he saw a large genie glaring at him. “I am the genie of the lamp,” it said, … [Read more...]

Pakinsanity: Now Even Being an Active Anti-American Terrorist Doesn’t Make You Off-Limits for The Obama Administration

Even the New York Times is shocked. Here’s how the story begins: “Just a month after accusing Pakistan’s spy agency of secretly supporting the Haqqani terrorist network, which has mounted attacks on Americans, the Obama administration is now relying on the same intelligence service to help organize and kick-start reconciliation talks aimed at ending the war in Afghanistan.” There are two problems here: --Despite massive financial aid, Pakistan has proven to be unreliable in … [Read more...]

The Battle for Egypt: The Army Strikes Back; A Turning Point

IMG_3722

This is of tremendous importance. Only hours ago I wrote about how the Egyptian military felt forced by circumstances to play a bigger, longer political role in order to stem anarchy and prevent Egypt from becoming an Islamist state. Here’s more evidence of that happening. In an editorial that reflects also the Obama Administration position, the Washington Post explained that the army having political power is bad and civilian rule is good: "The generals’ justification for their … [Read more...]

Muslim Brotherhood Makes Fools of Naive West; Two Smart Egyptians Fear Future

591px-Mohammed_Badiea

Can you imagine this? The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood lied! And can you imagine this: the two civilians who are Egypt’s greatest hope for avoiding an Islamist dictatorship are very worried. Let’s start with the Brotherhood. First, it promised to run candidates for only one-third of the parliamentary seats, saying this would proof of its moderation and willingness to share power. But a little later, it raised that number to 50 percent but said that’s all and they wouldn’t run a … [Read more...]

The Iran Terror Plot Crisis: Big Trouble for Obama

Remember that Hillary Clinton ad about it being the early morning hours and the phone’s ringing in the White House? Well it’s arrived in real life and the phone is—or isn’t—going to be answered by Barack Obama. And the question is: What are you going to do about the dramatic announcement of an Iranian plot to attack targets in Washington DC? True, it’s a bizarre story about Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Mexican drug lords. But, after all, the United States was impelled a step … [Read more...]

Trying to Manage the Post-Qadhafi Libya While Qadhafi is Still Around

The United States has recognized the Transitional National Council (TNC) of Libya as the provisional government of that country. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns addressed the Libyan Contact Group meeting–where else?–in Turkey, the Obama Administration’s favorite Middle East mediator despite that regime being a pro-Iran Islamist government that is turning Turkey into a police state. Turkey as a role model for the Arab world, anyone...? NBC Executive: What’s the … [Read more...]

Polls Prove Strength, Not Weakness, of Islamists in Egypt

Several recent polls purport to show the Muslim Brotherhood is unpopular in Egypt. An article in the Atlantic is particularly laughable, claiming the Brotherhood is less popular than Richard Nixon when he resigned!  The most important single point is this: the Brotherhood isn't at an "unpopular" 17 percent (among a presumed 100 percent) but a 17 percent base of support among the 50 percent of those who chose a party that might win seats (34 out of 100 percent). In other words, one in … [Read more...]
